Be a Student Hero

School sponsorships is one of the many ways Tabibu Africa, Inc works to provide aid in the areas we work in. We believe that education is the key for true positive change for the future.

Our main school, Little Giants, in Ruiru Kenya currently has several students that cannot afford tuition. We have yet to witness the Director, George, turn any students away regardless of gender, financial status, or health. Doing this creates a deficit of funding; paying teacher wages, licensing, supplies, and more. Tabibu Africa, Little Giants, and our Director can only continue this valuable work of education through sponsors like you!

You could be the hero for Lewis, a 7-year old very bright young man who always smiles. His mum, Margaret, is a single mother who works as a construction laborer. She has also helped to start up the first PTA in all of Ruiru through the Little Giants School. It is always a joy to follow up with Lewis and interview him in person. He is always so helpful and smiling. He loves to play football (soccer) and he's an amazing artist.

There's also sweet, 5-year-old, John. We have seen him grow and learn to smile again. He first came to us so shy and wouldn't look anyone in the eye. You can now see his bright eyes when he looks up at you and his sweet toothless grin. He wants to become a pilot when he grows up and we know he can do it!

Jane is a seven year old student with amazing goals. She loves to play hide-and-seek and is very grateful at having a sponsor. She was very ill last year and with the help of our medical team she was able to get proper medical attention as well as sanitation education for her family. She is now very healthy and has plans to study and then go onto University to become a doctor. Jane's mother is very active at the school as well, helping to start the first PTA in Ruiru.
With your help you can help students just like this continue with their education and not worry about if or where they can go to school.

With your donation of $155.00 per year (that's just 42 cents per day) your donation will provide one student with a uniform, shoes, books for the year, supplies, 6 month medical screenings and appropriate treatment, and 1-2 field trips. YOU will receive biannual reports on your child; progress note, picture, and letter or drawing from your student. You are also welcome to write letters to your student as well. You will also have the knowledge that because of YOU one more student will succeed and know that someone on the other side of the earth cared enough about them. That makes them smile everyday!

Little Giants; the Dream into Reality

In 2005 a man started a journey. This also happens to be the same year that I met George Njenga, the man I call ndugu (brother). I'm so happy that both of our paths have come to travel upon the same road.

George is also the Kenya Director for Tabibu Africa, Inc and we lean on him for everything. I met him in February of 2006 and we immediately became close friends. When Tabibu Africa, Inc was born we couldn't think of anyone better for the job of In-Country Director than George. Even though this is a non-paying position and is on a 100% volunteer basis George didn't hesitate to say yes!

George then let us know his dream and how proud he was that it was finally coming to fruition. It had been George's dream for as long as he could remember to open a school for all children and to make it as cost effective as possible. George understood the value of education and what happens when you don't have it. He lived through a childhood where education had to be fought for and cherished, never handed out, as it still is today in Kenya and other developing countries. He had witnessed too many children turned away from school because of their lack to pay tuition or even because they were HIV positive. George wanted change and he wanted education to not be just a dream for many. He understood what education did for him and his goal is to pay it forward. So he started working and dreaming then worked more.

In 2005 George had saved up enough money to purchase a 1/2 acre of land in the small town of Ruiru, Kenya. Then he started building brick by brick, literally. He would save up enough money for one brick, buy it and take it to the land and place it. Then again, as he saved up enough for another brick...

In 2012, seven years after the first brick was placed, Little Giants opened it's doors to 8 students. Most could not pay tuition and one student was HIV positive. George didn't turn them away. He said that he knew God would provide. George then presented Tabibu Africa, Inc with his school, with his story, the history, and his goal. We absolutely fell in love with his work, the school, and everything it stood for. We immediately jumped on board to do what we could to help out and become partners now not just with Tabibu Africa, Inc but also the Little Giants School.

The summer of 2013 Tabibu Africa, Inc and a team of volunteers headed to Ruiru, Kenya and built on two more school rooms. A medical clinic was also offered for the students and their families for basic medical care and screenings. In 2014 we returned again and supplied a room with a reading table, chairs, and shelves for George's next dream for the school, a library.  You can read about Maureens Corner here.

The Little Giants School now has 56 students with 11 of those students sponsored by people like you! For only $155.00 USD per year (less than $13 per month) can provide a student with tuition, quality education, a school uniform (required in Kenya), medical screenings one to two times per year, and one meal per school day. You can be a hero for the Little Giants School! For more information please click here or email: TabibuAfrica@aol.com

The Gift of Opportunity

A message from one of our student sponsors:

Roughly a year ago, my kids and I signed on to be sponsors of a student at Little Giants School in Ruiru, Kenya, East Africa. What a great decision! When I told my kids that we were going to “adopt” a boy from Kenya so he could attend school, my little eight-year-old son could not be more excited. His response went something like this, “Really, Mom?! We get to have a BROTHER?! I’ve always wanted a BROTHER!” Needless to say, we had a little expectation reset and education that our “adopted” student wasn’t actually going to come live with us, but that we were going to be his key to the future—the reason he would be given the gift of opportunity. And, really, in life the gift of opportunity is literally life-changing.

We now sponsor a 9-year-old boy named Lewis. Lewis’ mother works 2 jobs to pay for her Lewis’ basic needs. Once she was released from her second job, she would go to Little Giants and mop all the floors by hand in trade for Lewis’ tuition. Hearing this, I just knew we needed to help her and Lewis. I believe that any mother who is willing to work that hard to pay for their child’s education deserves a helping hand. So, we happily sponsored Lewis.

Sponsoring a student with Little Giants is very easy. It is an investment of $155 per year. This pays for the student’s tuition for a year, a uniform (In Africa all children who attend school are required to wear a uniform. For many kids, this inhibits their ability to attend and, therefore, restricts them from getting an education at all.), a medical screening, and a meal each day. The meal is very important too—the poverty in Kenya is unlike anything you could imagine. While I haven’t actually been to Kenya, I have a very amazing mother who has and I’m telling you that seeing photos of children atop garbage piles scrounging for food is an image I won’t ever forget.

In return for your sponsorship, you will receive a letter from Little Giants (affiliated with Tabibu Africa, a US-based humanitarian organization) and a photo of your child. Our little Lewis’ photo hangs on our fridge and my kids ask about him daily. You will receive communication from your child two times a year. For us, the Christmas card was a real highlight!
It gives me a great sense of pride knowing that we are helping someone else in need; and, it gives my kids a perspective about how much they have and the opportunities they have been given. There are many Little Giants Students who need sponsorships. As if everything I’ve told you isn’t enough, a Little Giants sponsorship is also a tax deduction—good for you and good for your sponsored kiddo! I would love to see each student have a sponsorship. Imagine the difference we could make!

Maureens Corner: Legacy of a six year old Kenyan Girl

During Tabibu Africa's maiden humanitarian expedition in July 2013 we offered a medical screening at the Little Giants Primary School in Ruiru Kenya. During this time we met a beautiful 5-year old little girl named Maureen. She came in with her step-mother who explained that Maureen was born with HIV. Her biological mother had contracted the virus prior to Maureen's birth and has since passed on. Maureen was raised since she was a baby by her father and step-mother who was the quintessential loving mother.

Since birth Maureen had been receiving treatment which is offered by the Kenyan government for free but was having horrible reactions from it. The treatment that was given to Maureen had saved her life. Her life would have ended within the first year had it not been for these treatments offered by the government. Our medical team spoke with Maureen's Kenyan Doctors and came up with a great treatment plan. Together we hoped to keep her with us awhile longer. Maureen looked forward to her little sisters turning old enough to join her in school and loved learning to read.

Our Board of Directors then traveled to Kenya November 2013 to check on our projects, school, upcoming ventures, and to check on Maureen. Maureen came right in to greet us and we quickly noticed that she wasn't feeling well. Her health had continued to decline and though she had a fever, pneumonia, thrush, and couldn't eat she still tried to go to school everyday. She said that when she couldn't come to school she missed her friends and teachers terribly. After speaking with Maureen's step-mother and going over her most recent lab work we knew that the end was imminent. Maureen sat on my lap and I gently rocked her while one of our amazing hospice nurses spoke with the school director and Maureen's step-mother, preparing them for the inevitable.

I asked Maureen if she had dreams or if she knew what was happening to her. She told me that she knew she was going and she worried about her mum and sisters. I asked her what she loved most about life and she told me she loved school and her friends. I held in the tears and just held her.

April 9, 2014 I received a call from our in-country Director and the director of the Little Giants School telling me that Maureen had passed on....There are no words to describe the loss. An entire generation is lost because of this horrible virus and more generations are lost every year. This isn't just a disease that effects adults. This disease affects all ages, all genders, all communities, and every living community on this planet.

Tabibu Africa, Inc lead another humanitarian expedition May 2014 and while there we purchased and placed a marker for Maureen. She was placed in such a peaceful place; right by the home she was raised in and played around, underneath an avocado tree. Placing a marker for her was the least we could do because she touched our lives in such a way that keeps us working, keeps up plowing forward, and keeps us active.

Now we are so overjoyed that we've been able to make "Maureen's Reading Corner" at the Little Giants School in Ruiru Kenya. It's a small corner with a reading desk and growing inventory of books where children can go to read, study, and learn. Maureen's friends and little sisters can go to Maureen's Corner anytime and think of her while reading a donated book for free. All because of Maureen's dreams; learning and friends.

Maureen may have been only six years old when she died but she left a forever legacy for her friends and the future students who will learn at the Little Giants School. Maureen left a forever imprint on all of us; another huge reason for us to keep doing what we do.
